Last week we wrote about the history of the Juneteenth holiday, but because it just became a federal holiday, some people aren’t sure how celebrate. According to junteenth.com, “It is a day, a week, and in some areas, a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future.” Juneteenth celebrations include rodeos and Miss Juneteenth competitions, essay contests and cookouts featuring soul food. Traditional songs by African Americans, such as “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing” are also associated with the holiday. Hopefully these celebrations become more integrated and celebrated by all communities in the US.
